Personally, I think everyone is way too obsessed with their websites.
I’ve helped hundreds of businesses communicate via words on a page, website, or elsewhere.
And I’ve watched wannabe entrepreneurs spend more time tinkering with their site than they spent growing their business.
However, if there’s one website component I always support investing in…
That would be your website’s photography
The Importance of a Visually Appealing Website
Your photos can make or break the potential bond you form with website visitors; first impressions matter, especially when it comes to how you present yourself online.
A visually appealing website immediately captures the attention of visitors and encourages them to explore further. It reflects the professionalism and credibility of your brand, making it essential to invest time and effort into its design. A well-designed website not only enhances the user experience but also sets you apart from competitors.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Designing a Website
When designing a website, there are several common mistakes that can hinder its visual appeal and overall effectiveness:
- Cluttered and confusing layouts. It's important to ensure that your website has a clean and organized design, with easy and intuitive navigation.
- Poor color choices, inconsistent branding, and excessive use of flashy animations can also detract from the overall user experience.
- Low-quality images or stock photos that don't resonate with your brand or target audience, can make your website appear generic and unprofessional.
This is why it’s important to pay attention and avoid the following website photography mistakes.
Mistake #1 - Lacking Clarity
Not knowing what kind of photographs you want means you’re not ready to hire a photographer.
Figure out the style, tone, and overall function of your images.
If your website is focused on you as a brand, then you’ll probably want an array of shots in a particular style.
But if the photographs are for a company that exists outside of your personal brand, that’s another story.
A skilled photographer can help you, to a point, but if you have absolutely no idea what you want, they’ll make suggestions that you might not care for, which wouldn’t be their fault.
So, remember: clarify what kind of website photography you want.
Mistake #2 - Overlooking Research
Following from mistake #1, not doing proper and thorough research is another big one to avoid.
You should know what’s out there in your industry, and get a feel for what you like, or don’t like.
More importantly, know what looks bad, so you don’t end up with the same tacky photos on your website.
I suggest collecting photos you like and placing them all in a Google Drive folder to use for reference throughout the entire process. The more prepared you are, the better.
Mistake #3 - Outright Copying Someone Else
Use what you like as inspiration, but don’t blatantly rip off someone’s entire design.
Plus, what you see other people doing might not even be working well.
And even if it is, that doesn’t mean it’ll work for you.
Don’t dance around like Marie Forleo unless you’ve got a similar vibe; let her personality inspire you to express your own.
If you see another company in your industry with a specific photo and copy layout, don’t mimic them because you think it works for them. Take the core idea and put your own spin on it.
Mistake #4 - Seeking Out Invalid Opinions
If you wanna get someone’s opinion on your website photography ideas, then ask someone who knows about web design and/or photography.
Don’t ask your mom or your unemployed friend (unless they know what they’re talking about).
Getting opinions from people who can’t give you an educated critique will screw up your creativity. Their thoughts will begin to influence yours and you might forget about a great idea for your website as a result.
Ask design geeks, people who appreciate visual aesthetics, or someone in your industry, but do not court the opinions of those that should not be giving them.
Mistake #5 - Putting all your eggs in one basket
I’ll cover how to find a good photographer for your website further down in the article, but one mistake you should avoid is not having options.
Make a list of at least 10 potential photographers you might wanna work with, and begin to widdle down from there.
Trust me, they’re not putting all their faith in you to be their only client. If a photographer gets a call to do a dope photoshoot for some hip clothing brand with a well-known model, they will take the opportunity and cancel on you.
This can be remedied by a good contract, and solid communication from the start, but be advised that you should always have other options.
Mistake #6 - Going in blind
You need to have a plan.
If you picked a responsible photographer, they’ll have gone over expectations with you beforehand and even mapped out exactly how to execute on the day of the shoot, with a complete shot list and schedule for the day
No one should be winging it the day of the shoot, including you.
Of course, you’ll need some direction from the photographer, but both of you should be clear on the schedule and necessary shots for the day.
There will be room to maneuver creatively, but there should be a roadmap to follow to make sure you get everything you need to make your website stand out.
Mistake #7 - Working With A Photographer Who Doesn’t Understand Your Needs
You want someone who has at least some foundational knowledge of web design.
But ideally, you’ll work with someone who knows exactly how to direct you based on your vision and has experience with photography for websites, in terms of how to frame the shots, and how to edit/crop them appropriately after the shoot.
Mistake #8 - Rushing Or Trying To Suppress Nervousness
A good photographer will be able to pick up emotional cues if you’re rushed or nervous; they should spend however much you need to feel comfortable.
Rushing through the process because you want it to be over will result in awkward photos that you’ll likely hate
Likewise with trying to suppress any anxieties you might be feeling
Allow yourself time and space to adjust if you’re nervous or uncomfortable. Communicate openly with the photographer if any icky feelings bubble up inside of you. Take a break if you need to, or change up the pace.
Skilled photographers will know how to provide you with creative direction in nerve-wracking situations. Just make sure you don’t rush through your photoshoot, or hide any feelings of stress.
Unless you want your photos to look like you’re full of gas.
Mistake #9 - Forgetting To Set Post-Production Deadlines
After your shoot, the photographer will need time to edit your photos.
Deadlines should be discussed early on in the process so you know what to expect.
Sometimes people think the photographer just disappeared when in reality they just have hundreds of other photos to sift through from other clients before they get to yours.
Plus, the good ones will want to spend more time getting the editing right.
Set expectations for how many rounds of editing they’ll provide, how long it will take, and if they’re not holding up their end of the bargain, make sure to politely inquire via text or email.
